Whenever one is planning to replace or have furniture cabinet doors made
for the cabinets at one’s home, one has several matters at hand to finalize
upon. Just as an instance, one may wonder if one wants to go for lighter shades
of cream for the cabinet doors, or would like to go for more solid wooden
shades. In the same way, one has a choice at going for cabinet doors that have
either a smooth or a textured finishing, or a combination of both.
An important selection that needs to be made at such a time is in between
using plywood and particleboard for making the furniture cabinet doors.
Let us see what particleboard is:
Particleboard is essentially an engineered product. It is made using wood
particles, and wood shavings or chips are used for its construction. They are
first mixed into a binding solution and then compacted into shape, using very
high pressure.
A particle board henceforth is an environment-friendly product as it is
made using recycled wood particles. It is more cost-effective as compared to
using plywood.
A quality particleboard is alternately known as Melamine. It lasts for a
lifetime in the kitchen. A 90lb density particle board holds up the hardware
and screws easily. Over the long run, it correspondingly saves trouble.
Plywood has been popular as well. It is the traditionally used alternative
for furniture cabinet doors. It is used for cabinets that are made using solid
wood.
Let us do a comparison between plywood and particle board:
Plywood and particle board are both priced differently. Melamine, being
made from recycled materials is more cost-effective as compared to plywood. It
is also available in a range of textures and colors, yielding more choices for
a consumer within a specific budget range.
If we consider the weight of particleboard and plywood, plywood is very
likely to weigh lesser. Melamine is created using compressed wooden chips. It
is higher in density as compared to plywood.
Correspondingly, plywood is likely to weigh 20lb less per sheet, as
compared to melamine. It is hence easier to use for construction, and the
cabinets made using plywood too are easier to lift and handle.
Weight, however, does not reflect over the quality of the end product. Both
plywood and melamine can be used to create an excellent quality of cabinets and
furniture cabinet doors.
In terms of durability, plywood must be seen as a very natural product. It
would have similar characteristics as trees. Woods are softer as compared to
melamine in most cases, and are hence more vulnerable to damage or dents.
Melamine, on the contrary, has a wipe-clean surface, and ages nicely with
time.
Water resistance of both, melamine and plywood are reasonably good.
Melamine’s water resistance might be a little bit better, owing to a protective
outer surface. Another reason why Melamine is much in demand is that it is more
versatile as compared to plywood. It offers solutions for just about any
situation, for cabinets and furniture cabinet doors.
