Why cope n’ stick doors make a great choice for kitchen cabinetry

Whenever one is looking for custom cabinet doors replacements, one comes across the term ‘cope n’ stick’. But sometimes, one is not sure of what the term implies.

We frequently come to find that during the rainy season, the kitchen cabinet fronts do not perform as well as one expects them to. This stays the same in the case of custom built cabinet doors.

Sometimes, the kitchen cabinets fronts are difficult to open and at other times, they are difficult to close because the wood expands. Going for MDF doors is one alternative at one’s disposal when the problem of doors difficult to operate occurs. Similarly, cope n’ stick doors also help counter the issue.

Cope n’ stick doors can be made to look very aesthetic, and are a pleasing addition to the living environment. They have some structural changes as compared to plain slab doors, which make them less vulnerable to a faulty operation when the humidity levels are high.

Defining cope-n-stick doors

Cope n’ stick refers to the tongue and groove joints used for the assembly of this particular type of cabinet fronts. The joint, while being among the oldest is also among the toughest ones, used in cabinetry.

Cope

Cope refers to the recessed mirror cut over the cabinet front. Putting the cope into the opposite edge enables the stick to be joined seamlessly. It creates a classic, ornate design. But the primary advantage that comes with the arrangement is associated with toughness and durability, which complement a nice fit.

Stick

In carpentry, stick refers to the molded edge. It is towards the inside of the cabinet doors. The pieces that, otherwise, meet at right angles are coped. This makes them the best fit for the profile.

Appearance

Five individual pieces make a cope n’ stick door. Four parts are used for constructing the frame and are known as stiles and rails. The vertical pieces are stiles, while the horizontal pieces are rails. The fifth piece is the panel, and the frame surrounds it.

Durability and ease of use

A cope n’ stick door is durable by itself. Using the design further keeps hinges safe because the kitchen cabinet door does not need to be slammed to shut.

Wood species invariably expand and contract in response to humidity levels. If it is an average-width slab cabinet door that one uses, it is likely to expand and contract by up to 1/5th of an inch with the changes in humidity levels, each year. At high humidity levels, this may prevent the cabinet door from shutting comfortably.

However, a cope n’ stick door is created by suspending the panel within the frame. This gives the panel additional room to expand and contract, without changing the size of the door.

When humidity levels are higher, the panel does expand. But at such a time, the edges go deeper into the stiles. The movement of the door hence stays physically undetectable.

Beyond the high functionality, cope n’ stick doors are also preferred for their aesthetics and are made available in a range of nice styling and patterns.
